The re-colonization meeting was a huge success. With over 50 brothers in attendance, we learned all about plans to bring back DU to Syracuse University. Why We Must Return DU to SU
Two hazing allegations at Syracuse University made national headlines this year. With no DU on campus, students don't have the option for fraternity membership that we had. They don't have the opportunity to join DU, the first and oldest non-secret, non-hazing fraternity in North America. We don’t have secret handshakes or rituals. Our initiation ceremonies are held at Hendricks Chapel with family and friends to share in the celebration. Anything anyone wants to know about us, we're glad to tell them. That's because we're proud of who we are and what we stand for. We’re returning to help build better Syracuse men through our four founding principles: friendship, character, culture and justice. And build ‘em strong enough to be friends for life. |
Did You Know DU's Connection to The Beach Boys? Old stories are like old friends - you have to visit them from time to time. Take this gem from the DU treasure trove relayed by Peter Babakian '73 and Jon Probstein ‘73 involving The Beach Boys. The iconic group had a concert in Syracuse in May 1971, but was out of funds to pay for a hotel. A sister in the Alpha Iota sorority behind our House working the concert asked Jon, who was Social Chairman at the time, if The Beach Boys and crew could stay at Delta Upsilon. The Brotherhood obliged and guys gave up their rooms at 426 Ostrom, sleeping in the living room and den. Peter and Jon recount Mike Love being a vegetarian, driving him in Peter’s Karmen Ghia to a vegan girlfriend’s apartment for dinner, taking Love to the airport and lending him a raincoat curbside in a downpour. Find The Beach Boy's Syracuse playlist or contribute a story to our war chest. We need material for Fall 2016 pledge tests. Please use this form to share a story or memory. |
Fundraising Update
We must raise $325,000 by the end of 2016 to fund our return to Syracuse. This money will cover all the advance legwork (e.g., pledge marketing); boots on the ground recruiting by three DU Headquarters representatives for three months; and recolonization costs (e.g., pledge class costs). It will also endow educational scholarships for our new Brothers, providing perpetual scholarships for 16 to 20 Brothers each year, as well as an annual "Building Better Men" retreat put on by DU Headquarters for the entire Chapter. To date, we've received over $77,000 in donations and pledges. Some have made a total pledge with plans to split the donation between 2015 and 2016 for tax planning or other reasons. Donations are tax-deductible.
