Spring 2016 - Ramping Up Edition
Ground Game Ramping Up on Syracuse Campus
Like many victorious DU chariot race teams high-tailing it across the Quad or brimming Genny Screamers shot-gunning out of the Funnellator, we’re barreling towards our glorious Fall 2016 Comeback. Collaboration among the Alumni Task Force, DU Headquarters and Syracuse University has ramped up. Indeed, Headquarters’ Karl Grinnell, Associate Executive Director, and Michelle Marchand, Senior Director of Chapter Development, traveled to SU and met with Laura Sanders, Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, and her assistant, Justina DeMott, on April 25 and 26 to discuss our Return game plan. Mmes. Sanders and DeMott opened their arms wide, sharing the Fall 2016 Greek calendar, fraternity and sorority engagement opportunities, and tips on marketing, publicity, where to find unaffiliated men, and potential partnerships with student organizations. After well covering all the Administration bases, Karl and Michelle dug deeper, planting our old gold and sapphire blue flag among the student body, meeting with Interfraternity and Panhellenic Council student officers and other fraternity presidents. And even deeper, sitting with the President-elect of the Student Association, who has expressed interest in being considered for our inaugural pledge class, and trading emails with several members of the men’s club volleyball team having the same hope, referred to us by Paul Simon ’88 and the Gamma Phi Beta President. |
Yes, kick-starting prospecting is important, but, naturally, friends and family will be the first source of potential pledges. Functionality has been developed on Headquarters’ website to capture contact information for interested legacies and friends. Here’s the link: http://www.deltau.org/expansioninterestform. Young men who submit their contact information will be mailed DU materials and contacted by Headquarters Recruiters when they arrive on campus in September. Please get the word out.
The official on-campus recruiting start date has been set: September 17th. On this day, our Recruiters will man a table at the annual Student Involvement Fair held on the Quad. The Recruiters are DUs, recent graduates, a couple years out of college – young bright-eyed Rick Holland types. (As most of you know, Rick went to work for Headquarters right out of Syracuse.) At the Fair, recognized student organizations share their mission with students and promote membership. From there, our Recruiters will fan out, canvasing the campus for the next three months, working the Friends & Family List and running down other leads to build the strongest possible pledge class.
Headquarters informs The Bazoo that one particularly effective recruiting strategy is visiting sororities and interviewing sisters, asking them the best guys they know who are not in fraternities. Apparently, the typical haul in a sorority run night like this is 200 quality leads. Headquarters sure does have a variety of tried and true methods in its play book. The Recruiters have a pretty good gig there, too.

Fundraising is going well with a strong finish in the works. Pledges and cash in the till are at 62% of goal, $201,000 towards the needed $325,000 with $124,000 to go. One hundred and eleven Brothers out of our 928 alumni have given to our Comeback. It wouldn’t be much of a comeback if a single guy wrote a big check for the balance. We’d rather have 124 Brothers give $1,000 apiece. There’s strength in numbers. The best Open Parties, the best Chapter meetings were wall-to-wall guys. Please consider giving what you can. You can make a tax-deductible donation here: http://duef.deltau.org/projects/csp/syracuse. We can’t do it right without you.
Here’s a list of the Brothers who have given (click here for donors). Thank you, Men.

History of Our Four Founding Principals
(From Delta Upsilon International Fraternity website) For years the story of our Four Founding Principles has been lost between the covers of books, a puzzle waiting to be put together. What began as a simple addition to a constitution, to provide a little more definition to a sense of purpose provided by our founding fathers, ended up as the still meaningful statement that we continue to use as our battle cry today. Now, the story can be told, and we can now laud the efforts of the unsung hero, the Father of the Four Founding Principles, Brother Edward C. Morey, Syracuse 1884. Credit finally given, where credit has been due for the past 110 years. Click here to read the history of our four founding principals |

President's Pen Points, by Peter J. Cosenza '84 Hello, and welcome to the summer '84 edition of President's Pen Points. What a year! It was truly a fantastic year for all at Delta Upsilon. The tradition of winning continued at 711 Comstock Avenue as we took first place in fraternity intramurals third place in the Chancellor's Cup Competition, and fourth place at the Muscular Dystrophy Dance Marathon.

However, more important than being near the top is the fact that we always had fun doing it. Whether it was participating in the softball finals and having brothers root the team on in the freezing confines of Coyne Field, or manning the Marathon booth, or even entering the "dirty song" competition at Maggie's, our brotherhood is always having a good time. As brother John Saviano '85 so aptly remarks, "We have more fun than the average fraternity." (Then again, we're NOT the average fraternity!!) While victory and fun continued at DU, so did the workings of a quality chapter. 1984 saw 20 DU's move on to the working world (no more late night hangs and beer), but the house initiated 28 outstanding young men during the year. Our new rush seminar and improved pledge education program have paved the way for an even stronger brotherhood in the future. On another encouraging note, the brothers and alumni took the initial steps toward an improved physical plant. The brothers and pledges showed their concern by painting and cleaning the house, and rebuilding the bar (a pleasure). For their part, the alumni have been dealing this summer with contractors for a "top to bottom" summer cleaning and house repair program. Our alums have always worked closely with the brotherhood, and this year has been no exception. We are always grateful! In closing, my two years as a DU have been quite remarkable. I have learned a great deal from living and working
with 70 other young men. DU has made life at SU very special, particularly this past semester. Whether it was the President's forum in Indianapolis, the Chancellor's Cup Banquet, the dance marathon, or yes — even the chicken caper, I was and always will be proud to represent Delta Upsilon — my fraternity. |
